The clients request for a 2000m2 250 bed backpackers ready to occupy in 12 months was ambitious, however was needed to replace the previous building on the site, destroyed in the seismic events of 2010 and 2011.
The geotechnical conditions of the site were difficult and with traditional construction methods would have required excavation and remedial work, making this project costly and unfeasible. Cross laminated timber (CLT) was selected due to its light weight. The other qualities it possessed only became apparent as the project progressed. An outstanding 2000m2 of structure was erected in 8 days and the building was occupied 9 months after construction progressed.
This is a warm, quiet building and sees a ubiquitous local material showcased to a largely international and very appreciative audience.
