The client had a vision with two key goals. The first was to provide 8 one bedroom units over three levels, with improved health and safety outcomes and budget. With a six month build, not twelve. The second was a prototype, something that established a pattern, that tested the concept. It was the focus on a prototype that drove the essence of design for manufacture and on site assembly.

The first consideration was to parameters of tooling, machining and panel sizes to three levels. To achieve this there was discussion around structural details, services, aesthetics, transportation and cranage. There is 140t of carbon sequestrated in the building from the CLT alone and with an obvious reduction in waste, the team is now using lean principals to independently measure this with accuracy.

It is a repeatable scalable model with a variable aesthetic twist, speaking to the context, environment and inhabitants.
