A city house near Hagley Park Christchurch, on a small site less than 200m2 with poor ground conditions.
Considering design for manufacture principles, CLT selected as primary structure. The solid timber envelope has at its heart a light filled space with strong horizontal axis. Spatially the two and a half level building suited living on first floor with access to a northern deck, and up again to a roof deck. Engineered to take the load of a spa pool, this decks views to the city, Port Hills to the south, and Mount Hutt out West.
The CLT walls left exposed in most interior situations. The soft grey wash allows the grain to still reveal and is a contrast to some of the machined elements of the fitout. Exterior cladding is thermally treated pine, in a soft wash.
This project bought together the skills and knowledge of our partners in commercial and multi-unit residential projects to complete a unique city house with locally sourced timbers as visual structure and aesthetic elements.
