In a busy retail area at the heart of Hornby, the 5000m² building redevelopment required a staged construction to remain open for patrons and staff. Half of the existing building was demolished, and over 2000m² of new mass timber was installed. The Pavilion, with its expansive angular timber and glazing, offers a welcoming connection to the outdoors and is family oriented, featuring a playground. The first floor bar and function spaces overlook the heart of the Club, the Sports Bar, centered around the expansive bar and the largest TV in the Southern Hemisphere, creating a lively and interactive atmosphere. From here, the Raffles, Pool Room, Internal Courtyard, TAB, and Gaming Rooms branch out. The public was able to enjoy these areas while strengthening and the new interior fit out of the existing building was underway.
The original main entrance remains, featuring a façade of fins leading into a comfortable, well lit foyer space. The back of house areas are centrally located and easily connected to all spaces. The traditional restaurant with a carvery invites visitors into the existing space, which also includes an internal children’s area, a courtyard, meeting rooms, and a large snooker room. This redevelopment of a keystone building has preserved and created many community spaces, offering a welcoming environment for a new demographic to enjoy.
